1. Gaumukh – The Source of the Ganges
Gaumukh, situated at 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), is where the Bhagirathi River emerges from the Gangotri Glacier. Named after its cow-shaped mouth (Gau meaning cow, mukh meaning mouth), it is a site of immense spiritual and natural significance.
2. Tapovan
Located at 4,460 meters (14,636 feet), Tapovan is a high-altitude meadow surrounded by Bhagirathi Peaks and glaciers. Revered for its spiritual significance, it is believed to have been a meditation site for ancient sages. It is also an ideal spot for camping, photography, and exploring Himalayan beauty.
Itinerary
Day 1: Dehradun to Gangotri
- Distance: 250 km drive (approx. 4–6 hours)
- Begin with a scenic drive to Gangotri, a holy town and the trek’s starting point.
Day 2: Gangotri to Bhojwasa (14 km)
- Trek alongside the Bhagirathi River through lush forests and mountain vistas.
- Reach Bhojwasa (3,380 meters), a serene hamlet serving as the base camp.
Day 3: Bhojwasa to Gaumukh (4 km)
- A short yet challenging trek across rocky terrain and the Gangotri Glacier.
- Witness the majestic Gaumukh, the source of the Ganges.
Day 4: Gaumukh to Tapovan (4–5 km)
- Ascend to Tapovan with spectacular views of Bhagirathi Peaks and glaciers.
- Camp amidst serene meadows at an altitude of 4,460 meters.
Day 5: Tapovan Exploration and Rest Day
- Explore Tapovan with panoramic views of Bhagirathi I, II, III, Shivling, and other peaks.
